Dash0 acquires Polar Signals

Monitor Notification Channel Delivery

See whether each notification channel delivers alerts, what each delivery status means, when Dash0 stops a channel, and how to recover a stopped channel.

Dash0 records the result of each alert that it sends to a notification channel. From these results, each channel gets a delivery status. The status tells you if your alerts arrive, before an incident shows you that they did not.

Only admins see the delivery status.

Where to See the Delivery Status

  • Channel details. Open a channel in Settings > Notification Channels. The Delivery field shows the status, the time of the last successful delivery, and, for a problem, the time of the last attempt.
  • Channel list. A marker shows next to each channel with a problem.
  • Settings menu. A marker shows on Notification Channels when a channel has a problem. The marker shows the most severe problem.

Three statuses are problems: Stopped, Refused, and Last alert failed. For these, the channel details also show a banner. The banner tells you what went wrong and what to do.

Delivery Statuses

StatusMeaning
DeliveringThe last alert arrived.
Last alert failedDash0 could not deliver the last alert. Dash0 still sends new alerts.
RefusedThe destination refused the last alert. This usually means expired credentials, missing access, or a deleted destination.
StoppedDash0 stopped sending alerts to this channel, because the destination failed too often.
Slow to respondDash0 stopped waiting for the destination to reply. These alerts usually still arrive.
No recent alertsDash0 has no current result for this channel.

A successful delivery clears Last alert failed and Refused. Stopped clears only when a trial alert or a test notification arrives.

What Counts

Each alert to a channel counts once, after Dash0 retries it. These alerts count:

  • New alerts, reminders, and resolved alerts.
  • Alerts from automations.
  • Test notifications from a saved channel.
  • The trial alerts that Dash0 sends to a stopped channel.

Alerts that Dash0 drops do not count. Dash0 drops alerts while a channel is stopped, and for a short time after the destination asks Dash0 to slow down.

When the Destination Asks Dash0 to Slow Down

When a destination limits the rate of requests, Dash0 pauses delivery to it for as long as the destination asks, up to one minute. Dash0 drops the alerts in that pause. Then delivery continues.

When Dash0 Stops a Channel

Here, "failed" means that Dash0 could not deliver an alert. It does not mean a failed check.

Dash0 stops a channel when one of these conditions is true:

  • The destination refused 3 alerts, with no successful delivery between them.
  • Dash0 could not deliver 20 alerts, with no successful delivery between them.
  • Dash0 could not deliver most alerts in a short period, even with some successful deliveries between them.

A slow response does not count toward these limits.

While a channel is stopped, Dash0 drops every alert for it, reminders and resolved alerts included, and does not send them again later. At most every 15 minutes, Dash0 lets the next alert through as a trial. If that alert arrives, delivery resumes.

Dash0 stops each channel on its own. A stopped channel does not affect the other channels of the same check rule.

Email channels are never stopped. They show their delivery status, but Dash0 always sends to them.

When the Status Is No Recent Alerts

The status is No recent alerts when:

  • Dash0 did not send an alert to the channel yet.
  • The destination settings of the channel changed after the last delivery. The next alert or test notification gives a new status.
  • Dash0 could not update the status recently.

A disabled channel keeps its last status.

Recover a Channel

  1. Fix the problem at the destination. For example, renew the credentials, give access again, or unarchive the Slack channel.
  2. If the channel is managed as code, fix its configuration at the source. The banner names the source.
  3. Save your changes to the channel, if any.
  4. Click Send test notification.

If the test notification arrives, the status changes to Delivering, and a stopped channel resumes delivery. The new status can take a short time to show.

If the test notification fails, the channel stays stopped, and the failure counts toward the limits.

A test notification updates the status only for a saved channel. A test from a form with changes that are not saved does not change the status.

If you change the destination settings of a stopped channel and save, delivery resumes with the next alert. A change to only the name does not resume delivery.
